• This little feller came onto the scene at this year's Musik Messe, where as usual Dr Doepfer was at the controls. In the hands of the good Doctor, it the Dark Energy squealed and screamed, making some pretty unearthly noises.
  
  Under the control of my siginificantly less experienced fingers, I still managed to get the Dark Energy to give me plenty of aural pleasure.

  Dark Place
  A monophonic, fully analogue, semi-modular synthesizer is what we have here. It's born of the Eurorack modules, but slightly larger, with quality knob caps and lovely positive metal switches. It's also really sturdily constructed, with everything bolted to the metal case plate. Modules are normalled, so that you'll be making sound right off the get-go without any additional patching, but you can also get control access to the VCO frequency and pulsewidth, VCF frequency, VCA amplitude and envelope gate and external audio inputs. Outputs are LFO1, and envelope.

  Open The Gate

  However, there's a twist - also included is a USB/MIDI CV interface with hardwired control over the VCO and Gate - so plug in a USB or MIDI lead, and you are in full control. There are also 3 additional CV outputs that allow you to take Pitch Bend (CV out 1), velocity (CV out 3) and an assignable MIDI controller (CV out 4) and control additional parameters by patching (with the 2 included mini jack leads) wherever the mood takes you.

Synthesizer Performance - Martin Peters - A minimal theme

Another good track by Martin Petters .As always it's a Berlin School track , but this time maybe because Martin has added to his set-up a Waldorf Q , this track remembers more to the 80's records of Tangerine Dream.

• This was a very quick one. From the initial idea, which started with fiddling around with the sequencer, it all took less than an hour and the video was in one take. The main 8 step sequence is coming from the Waldorf Q Keyboard; the Doepfer MAQ16/3 is synchronized to that. The Doepfer drives the Synthesizers.com Modular with the 2nd 8 step sequence you hear and the self-built Modular with the 3rd 8 step sequence which has a sort of Roland CR-78 rhythmbox sound. Some simple improvised solo's on the Nord Lead 1 and the Korg 900PS completes this minimal theme.

• Cwejman VCO-2RM ring mod output. The pair is in sync mode and the Doepfer A-137 Wave Multiplier is processing the sine output of OSC1 before being ring modulated with OSC2 sine using the on-board ring modulator. Most adjustments are made to the A-137 and the pitch of OSC2. The Make Noise QMMG is in low pass gate configuration with the resonance and freq up a little on the first channel. Sequence is S&H LFO to Plan B M14.

Oberheim - Matrix 6

The Oberheim Matrix 6 is one of the most popular synths from the 80s and a cheap way to get the Oberheim sound.Oddly , the rack version is more popular than keyboard version.
The only problem with this synth ( and with other 80's synthesizers ) , is programming sounds. The lack of dedicated knobs makes this work very tedious. Luckily you can edit the sounds via MIDI using a soft editor or a multi-purpose control surface.

On the video the synth is controlled by a Doepfer Drehbank

It's not the first time that I post Martin Peters' videos , He always makes good Berlin school tracks, but this one is specially good. Amazing sequences,atmospheric pads and beautiful melodies. If you like Klaus Schulze or Tangerine Dream, you'll not be disappointed.

A changing theme

• This time I experimented with changing between 3 different sequences using 3 presets from the Doepfer MAQ16/3. At first you hear the bass sequence from the Synthesizers.com Modular driven by row 1 of the Doepfer MAQ16/3. After that the volume is raised for the sequence from the self built Modular driven by MAQ's row 2. The 3rd sequence comes from the Creamware MiniMax ASB which is driven by MAQ's row 3. The strings are performed by the AKAI AX80 and the solo's are played on the Korg 900PS and the Clavia Nord Lead 1. You see, the setting is somewhat the same as the previous video but is sounds different.
  I had to shorten the video almost 6 minutes because of the YouTube limit of 10 minutes. The original video is 15:53 long and you can see or download it from my website.

• PlanB Model 15 saw output goes to PlanB Model 12 in LP, high Q mode. Doepfer A-140 modulates the M12 cutoff frequency. Result goes straight to speakers. Percussion sounds are two VCOs being ring modded with the 2 and 6 osc ouptuts on the Doepfer A-117. "Lead" part is the Doepfer A-196 PLL trying to track a VCO that is trying to track the PLL, and the result goes to Cwejman VCEQ-3 (see also PLL Arabesque). Sequencing is Doepfer A-160/161, A-152, and A-138. No manual adjustments made during this clip.

• 02072009 : Doepfer A-117 amplitude modulated by audio rate square wave from A-143-3. Bass kick is Cwejman VCO-6 sine with envelope pitch modulation. Bass part is Cwejman VCO-2RM FM configuration to QMMG. Midrange is Blacet Miniwave. Doepfer A-196 adds some melody to the top. Adjustments being made are to the Miniwave bank select and PLL pitch. Doepfer A-160/1, A-152, and A-138 handles the sequencing.

• 02072009 II : Same patch, but now Miniwave output level is being controlled by the snare signal, resulting in glitchy sounds. Cwejman PH-4 is modulating the decay of the envelope.

• This time I recorded the video and audio with different applications. But I noticed the video is not as smooth as it should be. Row 1 of the MAQ16/3 has an 8 step sequence for the 2 modulars. Row 3 transposes row 1. Row 2 drives the chord memory chords on the AX80. The Nord Lead 1 has a kind of PPG like sound.
