• If you've been wanting to get started in synth-diy by building a cool sound effect box you can't do better than this project. You will have a veritable plethora of sound generating devices in the palm of your hand although I recommend some kind of case (last joke I promise). This board is packed with simple circuits that sound cool. You'll be surprised by the number of sound possibilities it supports. You don't have to build all of the modules either. You can just build what you want to make a specific sound. You want wind... just build the White Noise Generator and one VCF. You want better wind build the White Noise Generator both VCFs and the output mixer. How about birds or bell sounds... just build the Sound Effect Oscillators an AR Envelope Generator and an LFO. You can go as far as you like with this project.

Comparative - ARP Odyssey 4075 - Yusynth ARP 4072

Now that I have at home an ARP Odyssey I've decided to compare the filter with my "Yusynth ARP 4072 filter clone" that I've built few months ago.

• This is a side to side comparative between ARP Odyssey 4075 filter and a Yusynth ARP 4072 filter clone.
  
  It's suposed that the 4075 filter that is installed on the ARP Odyssey is the same filter as the 4072 that was installed on the ARP 2600. I have to opportunity to compare the the original 4075 filter with the Yusynth 4072 clone module , so I've decided to make a comparative.
  
  Synthesizers.com VCO is connected to the ARP Odyssey external input
  Synthesizers.com VCO is connected to the Yusynth ARP 4072 filter clone.
  
  As you can heard the Yusynth module is a very accurate clone of the original ARP filter. Only slight differences can be heard at resonance settings but even these differences can be minimized changing the cut-off and resonance parameters. For example with 80% of resonance in both filters the sound could be not the same but if you move the resonance to 90% on the Yusynth module you could get the same sound.
  
  So the only thing that I can say is... congrats Yves for your great work!!!

DIY - Resonant LoPass Gate

Martin Peters shows the applications of this DIY project that it's based on the Buchla 292 module.

Demo Resonant LoPass Gate

• This is a short demo of the Resonant LoPass Gate which is a clone of the famous Buchla 292c LoPass Gate. Thomas White is the one who made this possible by producing the schematics and the PCB. The PCB with components already on it I got 2nd hand from someone in Belgium. The two Vactrols on it are VTL5C6, which are the fast type. I added the components for the mixer section and got the panel, pots and knobs from The BrideChamber.
  In this demo the patching is as follows:
  On the LPG audio input 1 is a DotCom VCO with a triangle wave.
  On the LPG audio input 2 is another DotCom VCO with a triangle wave.
  On the LPG Control input is the Gate of the Doepfer MAQ16/3 sequencer. You can see me adjusting the length of the gate with the knobs on the MAQ16/3. The CV of the MAQ16/3 is going to the VCO's.
  On the LPG CV 1 input is the output of a DotCom Envelope Generator (settings A-0, D-4.5, S-0, R-2). So when turning the CV 1 knob up, the output of the EG is mixed with the Gate signal. Initially the CV 1 knob is down.
  The LPG's output goes to the AKAI Head Rush E2 which is switched on after a while during the music bit.
  I couldn't help to put a little music in the middle of this video, hope you don't mind.
  The resonance in the Frequency mode is quiet strong but I wanted to show the full turn; perhaps you will hear some clipping.

  -Only effect used was just a slight touch of digital delay to give space

  This project took about a month of gathering the parts necessary as it was my first learning experience. Build time was about 8 hours total.

DIY - Appendage Touch Ribbon Sequencer

Despite piano keyboard is the most extended way to control synthesizers, it's not the only one. Alternative controllers, gives you a different approach to the instrument, and also a totally new ways to perform music. For me one of the most interesting controllers are the ribbon controllers, that allow the musician a continuous and discrete control over any CV/MIDI parameter of a synth. It's similar to the way of a trombonist interacts with his instrument.

This video shows an amazing DIY ribbon controller created by Scott Stites, one of the most reputed persons on the Synth DIY comunity.

• This is a demo of a very basic application of the Appendage Touch Ribbon Sequencer I'm working on. The sequencer can be clocked, or steps can be selected by the ribbon. In this video, various step values are programmed in and accessed by the Appendage. The step voltage is driving a VCO. The slide output of the Klee is controlling filter cutoff. The TFS output of the Appendage is also controlling the cutoff of the Triple Wilson SVVCF module, which is processing a copy of the Appendage driven VCO and also the signal controlled by the Klee, which is providing the sequenced accompaniment. So, stretching two points of pressure affects the sequenced part.

Lots of modules used - 3 motm 300's being cross-modulated, getting pitch cv's from the klee sequencer; main clock is the blacet binary zone; clock is being divided by the cgs pulse divider, various odd pulses are kicking several motm 800's which are firing into 3 lpg's, which are shaping the vco's sound; then there's the wogglebug, which is set to this eerie singling clocked setting I found, running through a motm 190 vca controlled by a long ramp wave, then running into a motm 410, feeding stereo outs. Audio captured in cubase, reverb added.

New Clock, and 8-step Squencer Voltage Control

• In this vidie you see me repurposing a small plastic box that was originally made to hold .22 caliber bullets. I think it looks great as a module for making electronic music. You will notice that I do not use a fancy drill press to cut holes in the plastic for the various componants.
  
  The last bit of the video shows a new method I am using for voltage control over an ocsillator. I am emplying an LED and a photo resistor. I works pretty good when te LED is relatively bright, but when the voltage drops below a certain threshold the led lags in attinuation so there is a sort of glide in pitch to the low notes. I will work it out latter.

  This setup is played much like a Trautonium. A ribbon controls the pitch and volume is controlled with a foot pedal.
  
  Technical Setup:
  
  The ribbon CV is fed into a Solid State 1V/oct oscillator which is fed to the sync input of the Phantastron. Audio is taken from the Phantastron only and delay is added.
  Volume is controlled by a Roland expression pedal that plugs into the Zia Ribbon's circuits (which are on the desk behind me) and controls a VCA.
  
  The ribbon shown is a prototype, and the nice wooden case has not been built yet...

"In March of 2004, I breadboarded a specialized sort of sequencer inspired by Don Buchla's Quantized Random Voltage function in his 266 Source of Uncertainty module and Ken Stone's Gated Comparator.

A while later, Romeo Fahl built a sequencer based on this design. He dubbed it the "Klee Sequencer", after the artist Paul Klee. This name immediately stuck in my mind, because Paul Klee's art is beautifully abstract, much like the results of this sequencer, and the name 'Klee' is actually pronounced as 'clay', as in my mention of the process of programming the thing. Thus, the name 'Klee Sequencer' was born".

• This is an extra Klee I have on loan from electro-music's Photon. It's a really nicely built and arranged Klee. I've got the hood popped so I can look at the guts (really nice wiring in this). This is a quick video of it controlling two VCOs with the A output while the filter is controlled from the A+B output. It's in 8X2 mode, random mode, with my Blacet Dark Star noise output driving the random input. I flip between Invert B On and Off, and Gate Bus 1 load on and off to vary things around.
