Roland - CR-78

The Roland CR-78 it's an analog drum machine from the late 70s. It's a preset based drum machine but it also has user memories that allow the user to save his own patterns.

  • The Roland CR-78 came out 1978 and was the first programmable drumbox with a microprocessor. The sounds are analog. 4 own rhythms are programmable, the other are presets. The CR-78 allows to combine 2 rhythms. Also you can cancel BASSDRUM, SNARE, CYMBAL, COWBELL / CLAVES. A little mixer allows adding GUIRO, CYMBAL and METAL BEAT.

    The CR-78 was used by Phil Collins (in the air tonight), Roxy Music (jealous guy), Visage (fade to grey), OKAY (education), and many others.

    Int the second half of the film you see the CR-78 synchronized with a Sequential Circuits TOM.
    I also used reverb from the Yamaha ProR3.

Roland - CR-68


Roland CR-68 Preset Rhythm Pattern Demo

  • Little brother to the famous CR-78. The 68 has the same preset rhythms as the 78, but lacks programmability, fade in/out, voice cancel and the additional "constant" percussion (Metallic Beat, Tambourine & Guiro). I have the pattern variation set to automatically change from the A pattern to the B pattern every 2 measures. Later I demonstrate the other fill in patterns and lastly combine rhythms. Be sure to subscribe to my Channel for future videos of vintage electronic instruments. I plan to make a CR-78 video after I take it to Audio Electronics in Dallas for some TLC. Special thanks to my son, SuperSane101, for making the edits at the end. (Someday, I'll learn to edit)

Sound Synthesis - Vintage Drum Machine 2

Few days ago I've uploaded a video with a patch that I've made on my modular that emulates an analog drum machine. Pehr81 liked the idea and made his own version of the patch

  • This is a similar patch, but with two VCAs. One with noise input and the other with oscillating bandpass with noise. The hihat sound reacts to the clock output and the drum to the gate output.

Sound Synthesis - Vintage Drum Machine

Today I've made this patch that emulates the sound of the first analog drum machines. The patch is made using a very limited number of modules ( 4 ) of my modular synthesizer and the MFOS 16 Step Analog sequencer. I've enjoyed a lot playing with this patch.

  • This patch emulates the classical sound of the drum machines from the 60s-70s

    The core of this patch is white noise generator , that is filtered using a multi mode filter.
    The sequencer CV out is controlling the the 1/cvt input of the filter, so you can program on the sequencer different filter response for every step.

    The filter has individual outs for filter types, here I'm using high-pass and band pass connected to a mixer and mixer out is conecto to VCA .

    The VCA is controlled by one ADSR that is triggered by sequencer gate out.

Music and More ( MAM ) - ADX1

This drum machine was produced by the German company MAM ( Music and More ). It's an analog drum synthesizer with five instruments ( Metal, Snare, Hihat,Synth, Bass ), the external aspect is similar to the Vermoma DRM1. I prefer not to call it "Drum Machine" because it lacks of internal sequencer so I think that "Drum Synthesizer" it's a more accurate definition.

Music And More (MAM) ADX 1 Demo

  • Quick demo of a compact and inexpensive drum synthesizer. It has 5 voice channels: Bass, Synth, Snare, Hi Hat and Metal (in ascending order on machine). One cool feature about this machine is that the Snare and Hi Hat channels feature both "open" and "closed" variants. You can here the "closed" snare on notes 5 & 13 (on a typical 16th note Roland x0x style pattern) and the "open" snare on note 8 (same note step I have the "synth" sound programmed on). Only real compaint I have with this instrument is that the MIDI note numbers are fixed and cannot be reassigned. The MIDI Channel is assigned using 4 dip switches on the rear panel. The rear panel has stereo outs (which I used with the front panel pan pots in this demonstration) and individual outs for outboard processing and/or mixing. The LED for the Metal channel is out on this particular unit. The sounds are sequenced via Roland TR-909 External Instrument mode. If you''re craving some fresh drum sounds and cannot afford the Vermona DRM-1, this is a great alternative. The bass on this demo is pretty low and cannot be heard on my crappy lap top speakers. NEWS - Drumcomputer MFB-522

MFB announces his new analog drum machine, the MFB-522. The aspect is very similar to the MFB-502 but this one has a sound more like the Roland TR-808. ( the 502 was more like early analog drum machines, Minipops, Ace-tone etc )

Model 500 - 'The Chase' - SH-101 MC-202 TR-606 Moog Prodigy

  • JH from Dirty Hospital skips lunch to batter down a version of 'The Chase'. The Mac is firing out MIDI clock to the Kenton Pro 2, which is sending arpeggio clock to the Roland SH-101 and DIN sync to the Roland MC-202. The Roland TR-606 is taking sync from the 202. The 202 is also going through the Holy Grail pedal by Electro Harmonix, on the excellent 'Flerb' setting. And of course the bassy goodness comes from the Moog Prodigy. Recorded into Ableton, with a smidgen of compression over the mix. John enjoyed a bigger than normal tea that evening.
