Modular Madness - Buchla 259e Sequence

Another amazing patch created by boobtube356 .

259e Sequence

Text from the video :
  • Again a pair of 259e oscillators provide the sound sources. Both are set up in tracking mode with the modulation oscillator controlling the morph, and running in hard sync mode. The principal oscillators are in mem skew "b" mode at about 2 o'clock. The results are going through the 292e in LPF mode and then to the 291e to emulate a resonant low pass filter. Buchla running in Moog mode, if you will. Just more tonal stuff for your enjoyment, and to demonstrate the range of this instrument, and the 259e in particular.

DIY - Resonant LoPass Gate

Martin Peters shows the applications of this DIY project that it's based on the Buchla 292 module.

Demo Resonant LoPass Gate

Text from the video :
  • This is a short demo of the Resonant LoPass Gate which is a clone of the famous Buchla 292c LoPass Gate. Thomas White is the one who made this possible by producing the schematics and the PCB. The PCB with components already on it I got 2nd hand from someone in Belgium. The two Vactrols on it are VTL5C6, which are the fast type. I added the components for the mixer section and got the panel, pots and knobs from The BrideChamber.
In this demo the patching is as follows:
On the LPG audio input 1 is a DotCom VCO with a triangle wave.
On the LPG audio input 2 is another DotCom VCO with a triangle wave.
On the LPG Control input is the Gate of the Doepfer MAQ16/3 sequencer. You can see me adjusting the length of the gate with the knobs on the MAQ16/3. The CV of the MAQ16/3 is going to the VCO's.
On the LPG CV 1 input is the output of a DotCom Envelope Generator (settings A-0, D-4.5, S-0, R-2). So when turning the CV 1 knob up, the output of the EG is mixed with the Gate signal. Initially the CV 1 knob is down.
The LPG's output goes to the AKAI Head Rush E2 which is switched on after a while during the music bit.
I couldn't help to put a little music in the middle of this video, hope you don't mind.
The resonance in the Frequency mode is quiet strong but I wanted to show the full turn; perhaps you will hear some clipping.

Modular Madness - Sduck409

Complex modular patch created by Stephen Drake. You can find more pictures of his huge modular system here

3LpgThingie

Text from the video :
  • A short video of an annoying patch I've been messing with. Lots of modules used - 3 motm 300's being cross-modulated, getting pitch cv's from the klee sequencer; main clock is the blacet binary zone; clock is being divided by the cgs pulse divider, various odd pulses are kicking several motm 800's which are firing into 3 lpg's, which are shaping the vco's sound; then there's the wogglebug, which is set to this eerie singling clocked setting I found, running through a motm 190 vca controlled by a long ramp wave, then running into a motm 410, feeding stereo outs. Audio captured in cubase, reverb added.

Buchla - 100 Series

Buchla 100, first modular synthesizer designed by Don Buchla. More than 20 types of modules were produced ( oscillators, filters, sequencers, gate processors, random voltage generators .... )
This system was produced between 1963 and 1970

Buchla 100

Text from the video :
  • Messing around on a Buchla 100 during restoration.
This instrument belongs to Tom of The Chemical Brothers and was built in the late 1960's.
It's one of two cabinets, the other now being finished.
It is an all discrete analog machine with not a single IC inside.
Even the sequencer is an all transistor design.

Buchla - Model 259 Programmable Complex Waveform Generator

Buchla 259 Vintage Modular Oscillator

Text from the video :
  • Rare 1970's Modular Oscillator running through a Plan-B Vactrol Filter and Gate. There are Vactrols (components that mate LED's with audio for natural acoustic tones) in the Osc so this makes a close to vintage complete Buchla sound. The Osc sounds like nothing else I've heard with it's waveshaping and altering of harmonic structure of the waveform. There's a Modulation OSC that also can pitch same as Main but I use it here for FM, AM and Timbre Shaping. Used here also are my Doepfer LFO, Plan-B Random, ASys Envelope, Modcan Sequencer and Asys Delay/Sampler.

Buchla The Music Easel

Charles Cohen at the Buchla Music Easel

Text from the video :
  • This colorful video features sound artist Charles Cohen improvising on a 1970's Buchla Music Easel. This extremely rare instrument is one of Don Buchla's 200 series. Buchla (a pioneer of audio synthesis) only manufactured 14 of these units. The entire film was edited from an hour-long set of free improvisation, with audio was taken directly from Charles' mixing board.

All of the photography and editing was produced by Alex Tyson, a sound and video artist from Pennsylvania. The film was shot in 16:9 720p High Definition format, using the Letus35 Extreme and a 35mm LensBaby 3GPL. This film is free to distribute, share, blog, vlog, etc. When re-posting, please copy and paste this text to inform anyone about the film. Also.. please 'bling out' the embed size to 640x360.

At this time the film is only available online. While you can stream it in HD, it is best viewed on DVD.
Please contact the filmmaker for hard copies if interested.
