TipTop Audio - Z8000 Matrix Sequencer

The TipTop Audio Z8000 is an analog sequencer for Eurorack modular synths. It's a different approach to analogue sequencing, Taking the advantage of its matrix design the user can have 4x4 step sequences ( horizontal or vertical ) or 1 x 16 step sequences ( horizontal or vertical ) ,and each sequence can have its own clock!!! This video shows how to do it :)

Moog - Modular System 55

Audio quality on this video could be better but there's not so many opportunities to see a Moog Modular Sytem 55 working so nice. A piece of "synth history"

Moog modular system 55 sequencing demo

Text from the video :
  • This is a Moog modular system 55 from middle '70 years. The psu was restored and wood cabinets have been remade with the same high quality components and dimensions. This system is FULLY working and customized with a 904A filter in plus (less the noise and blank panel) so this system has 3x filters (2x lowpass + 1x highpass) + Filter coupler, very rare and special!

DIY - Appendage Touch Ribbon Sequencer

Despite piano keyboard is the most extended way to control synthesizers, it's not the only one. Alternative controllers, gives you a different approach to the instrument, and also a totally new ways to perform music. For me one of the most interesting controllers are the ribbon controllers, that allow the musician a continuous and discrete control over any CV/MIDI parameter of a synth. It's similar to the way of a trombonist interacts with his instrument.

This video shows an amazing DIY ribbon controller created by Scott Stites, one of the most reputed persons on the Synth DIY comunity.

Appendage Touch Ribbon *Sequencer * - First Video (With Klee Accompaniment)

Text from the video :
  • This is a demo of a very basic application of the Appendage Touch Ribbon Sequencer I'm working on. The sequencer can be clocked, or steps can be selected by the ribbon. In this video, various step values are programmed in and accessed by the Appendage. The step voltage is driving a VCO. The slide output of the Klee is controlling filter cutoff. The TFS output of the Appendage is also controlling the cutoff of the Triple Wilson SVVCF module, which is processing a copy of the Appendage driven VCO and also the signal controlled by the Klee, which is providing the sequenced accompaniment. So, stretching two points of pressure affects the sequenced part.

Semi-Modular Madness - Korg MS-20 / MS-50 / SQ-10

Another great video by Newueel showing his Korg MS based set-up ( 2 x MS-20 , MS-50 and SQ-10 ).

Korg MS Series - Multifunctional Monophonism

Text from the video :
  • This powerful analogue setup with 3 monophonic synths and an analogue sequencer shows the real power of these great little machines!

The MS-50 has a very interesting stereo panning patch. Both MS-50 VCA's are using the same sound source, but the outputs are routed to different channels/speakers. VCA1 (left speaker) is controlled by EG1 OUT. VCA2 (right speaker) is controlled by EG1 REV OUT (reversed output). This way the amp levels for both speakers are always the opposite of each other.
The fade time between the speakers is controlled by the EG1 attack (R2L) and delay time (L2R). EG1 is triggered once every 32 steps (by SQ-10 + MS-50 divider), so the stereo panning cycle is synched with the other SQ-10 patterns.
Also a flanger+delay (from the Kaoss pad) is added to the MS-50 (but the stereo effect is from the MS-50!).

The MS-20's are basically playing the drum parts, but this video also shows how to mix this with melodic parts.

Most of my actions are explained in the video, so just watch and enjoy!

Synthesizer Performance - Martin Peters - A changing theme

It's not the first time that I post Martin Peters' videos , He always makes good Berlin school tracks, but this one is specially good. Amazing sequences, atmospheric pads and beautiful melodies. If you like Klaus Schulze or Tangerine Dream, you'll not be disappointed.

A changing theme

Text from the video :
  • This time I experimented with changing between 3 different sequences using 3 presets from the Doepfer MAQ16/3. At first you hear the bass sequence from the Synthesizers.com Modular driven by row 1 of the Doepfer MAQ16/3. After that the volume is raised for the sequence from the self built Modular driven by MAQ's row 2. The 3rd sequence comes from the Creamware MiniMax ASB which is driven by MAQ's row 3. The strings are performed by the AKAI AX80 and the solo's are played on the Korg 900PS and the Clavia Nord Lead 1. You see, the setting is somewhat the same as the previous video but is sounds different.
I had to shorten the video almost 6 minutes because of the YouTube limit of 10 minutes. The original video is 15:53 long and you can see or download it from my website.

DIY Sequencer

New Clock, and 8-step Squencer Voltage Control

Text from the video :
  • In this vidie you see me repurposing a small plastic box that was originally made to hold .22 caliber bullets. I think it looks great as a module for making electronic music. You will notice that I do not use a fancy drill press to cut holes in the plastic for the various componants.

The last bit of the video shows a new method I am using for voltage control over an ocsillator. I am emplying an LED and a photo resistor. I works pretty good when te LED is relatively bright, but when the voltage drops below a certain threshold the led lags in attinuation so there is a sort of glide in pitch to the low notes. I will work it out latter.

Synthesizer Performance with Korg MS family

* * * Korg MS-50 * MS-20 * MS-20 * SQ-10 * * *

Text from the video :
  • Another interesting experiment with only original live created MS-20 / MS-50 sounds (incl. beat), no FX at all!

The SQ-10 triggers and sequences all synths:
    - The MS-50 plays a rythmic bass pattern (SQ-10 channel A+B).
    - The MS-20 plays another rythmic pattern using 2 different tuned VCO's, also sequenced by channel A+B, but using the inverted signal, which also goes through the MS-50 integrator for portamento purposes. EG1 controls the VCO frequency and swaps between 2 CV values every 32(!) steps, by using step 1 trigger output (which triggers once every 8 steps) divided by 4 (MS-50 divider) to generate a trigger once every 32 steps.
    - The other MS-20 plays a simple beat, a bass drum with hi-hat pattern (channel C).

I love this kind of atmospheres and drones!!!!! It's perfect to chill on the sofa and do nothing but look to the ceiling ;)

Upper Atmosphere by JLR

Text from the video :
  • Another simple test that also ended up as a little peice of 'music'. This time I was trying out the Synthesizers.com Q119 sequencer I recently received. This is my first sequence on it and I liked it enough to try to turn it into 'something'.

Studio Techniques - Swing time on analog sequencers

Thomas White from Natural Rhythm shows how to add life to your analog sequences.

Analog Sequencer Swing Time MFOS MFOS Music From Outer Space

Text from the video :
  • Have you ever wanted to add "swing time" to your modular sequences? I have! Typically I have used MIDI, or a swung clock signal from my 909 or other Roland drum machines to achieve it. But, on a plane ride back from Portland I realized what I needed to do in order to get it going in my synth.

The equipment needed is, most importantly, a VC-LFO and a Frequency or Pulse Divider. The clock signal is sent to the sequencer. The clock signal is also sent via a multiple or y-cable to the pulse divider. Dividing the clock signal by 2 allows you to have a pulse on every other step of the main clock signal. Take that half-time clock signal and patch it to an Envelope Generator. The output of the EG goes to the FM input of the VC-LFO. By setting the decay/sustain time on the EG and the FM time on the LFO right you can offset every "up beat" to get the swing going. It will take a bit of dialing in to get it right, but hey, it's a great lesson for me either way. Now I have a whole new world of possibilities opened up with my same old modular synth. Thanks for stopping by! Now go and check out synthtech.com and musicfromouterspace.com to buy these great modules!

Synthesizer Performance - Martin Peters - A symphonic theme

Live performance by Martin Peters. As always, great sequences mixed with beautiful pads that bring you memories from Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze..... With musicians like Martin Peters Berlin school will never die :)

A symphonic theme

Text from the video :
  • My 25th video upload to YouTube so a little anniversary!
A symphonic theme this time and did it all in 1 take. I was a little worried that the volume was somewhat too loud because of the heavy bassline but I did not hear obvious clipping. At first you hear a sequence from the Synthesizers.com Modular driven by row 1 of the Doepfer MAQ16/3. After that the volume is turned up for the sequence from the self built Modular driven by MAQ's row 2. The 3rd sequence comes from the Creamware MiniMax ASB which is driven by MAQ's row 3. The bassline and the melodies are performed on the AKAI AX80 and the Clavia Nord Lead 1.

Synthesizer Performance - rottenrow ( Model 500 - "The chase" )

"The chase", classic electro track from Model 500 ( Juan Atkins ) covered here by rottenrow.

Model 500 - 'The Chase' - SH-101 MC-202 TR-606 Moog Prodigy

Text from the video :
  • JH from Dirty Hospital skips lunch to batter down a version of 'The Chase'. The Mac is firing out MIDI clock to the Kenton Pro 2, which is sending arpeggio clock to the Roland SH-101 and DIN sync to the Roland MC-202. The Roland TR-606 is taking sync from the 202. The 202 is also going through the Holy Grail pedal by Electro Harmonix, on the excellent 'Flerb' setting. And of course the bassy goodness comes from the Moog Prodigy. Recorded into Ableton, with a smidgen of compression over the mix. John enjoyed a bigger than normal tea that evening.
