  • Technology : Analog

The MFOS Synth-DIY Experimenter PC Board

Synth-DIY Experimenter Board Part 1

Synth-DIY Experimenter Board Part 2

Text from the video :
  • If you've been wanting to get started in synth-diy by building a cool sound effect box you can't do better than this project. You will have a veritable plethora of sound generating devices in the palm of your hand although I recommend some kind of case (last joke I promise). This board is packed with simple circuits that sound cool. You'll be surprised by the number of sound possibilities it supports. You don't have to build all of the modules either. You can just build what you want to make a specific sound. You want wind... just build the White Noise Generator and one VCF. You want better wind build the White Noise Generator both VCFs and the output mixer. How about birds or bell sounds... just build the Sound Effect Oscillators an AR Envelope Generator and an LFO. You can go as far as you like with this project.

Rare Chance To See and Hear Roland System 700

Text from the video :
  • So I get an email from a friend saying "Have you seen this?" I check the link and am confronted by the wonderful Roland System 700 - a beast of a modular from the late 1970's that's in immaculate condition. Of course, I'd love to buy it I say, but I suspect the final price is likely to be a tad out of my reach (it was at £18k when I looked). But its in Bath came the reply. Right then, a quick message to the seller and off I went to take a look.

Kindly, Mark who is selling this as part of a collection for Ian Stanley, a former Tears for Fears keyboard player and producer with a long list of credits (Human League, Aha etc), invited me round to take a last look at it before it heads off to it's lucky new owner

      System 700 Facts
    • Made from 1976-1982
    • Weighs over 160KG in case
    • Originally cost over £10,000
    • Full system has 9 oscillators
    • Power is distributed using standard mains IEC connectors, but the voltage is much lower – so don't plug it in to the the mains!

    • Users include: Giorgio Moroder, Hans Zimmer, Isao Tomita and Pink Floyd

Many thanks again to Mark for letting us take a look around. Keep an eye on some of the other stuff coming up from this collection at Mark's merchant link on eBay.

  • Brand : Yamaha
  • Model : SY-1
  • Year : 1974
  • Technology : Analog
  • Synthesis Method : Subtractive
  • Polyphony : Monophonic

Kebu - Sticky strut (Yamaha SY-1 demo)

Text from the video :
  • This is a song I composed demonstrating the sounds of the Yamaha SY-1 synthesizer. Since it is a monophonic analog synth, no chords can be played. The song was made by multitracking to a computer. No other effects were used than a Roland Space Echo and channel EQ. The drums are programmed using a drum sampler. For mixdown, the tracks were subgrouped and transfered to a Tascam 38 8-track tape recorder. The song was mixed in realtime with an analog mixer to a stereo cassette deck. EQ and limiting was used for the final digital master.

Moog Realistic Concertmate MG-1 [HQ]

Text from the video :
  • During the last few days I've been restoring this Moog Realisitic Concertmate MG-1 and now the synth is like new. The Moog MG-1 is basically a Moog Rogue with a polyphonic section, it has 2 VCO , 1 LFO with S&H , 1 AR envelope , noise, ring modulator and a genuine Moog filter. The sound is amazing and you can get a lot of different kind of sounds from deep basses to soft leads and brass sounds.
On this video i'm just showing a few of sounds that can be created on moment with this little synth

SEQUENTIAL CIRCUITS PRO ONE - HQ demo VINTAGE SYNTHESIZER 1981

Text from the video :
  • The Pro One is a very great sounding monophonic synthesizer. The sound architecture is very similar to the Prophet-5.

Also it has an ARPEGGIATOR and a great little sequencer. You can transpose the sequences on the keyboard.

On this video, sometimes I used Lexicon MPX-500 and Roland DEP-5 for reverb and delay.

Roland Jupiter-4 Analog Synthesizer pt.1

Roland Jupiter-4 Analog Synthesizer pt.2

Text from the video :
  • Roland Jupiter-4
4-Voice Analog Synthesizer from the year 1978.
The JP-4 sound is very warm and organic. The 4 VCO`s are always a bit out of tune but this is the typical JP-4 sound. A very nice analog synth!
Unfortunately a bit underrated. Not compared to the bigger JP-6 or JP-8. For me the best sounded Jupiter.

the demo shows some sound settings, arpeggiator and unisono mode
FX: Lexicon MPX for delay and reverb

used by: Human League, Depeche Mode (Vince Clark), Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, Vangelis, Thomas Dolby....

Korg - Poly-61

The Korg Poly-61 is a polyphonic synthesizer from the early 80s and It was the successor of the Korg Polysix. The main differecences betwen those models are ( according to wikipedia ) :
  • Many parameters on the Poly-61 are limited to 8 settings, whereas the Polysix has better parameter resolution
  • The Poly-61 has DCOs.
  • The Poly-61 has two oscillators versus one on the Polysix
  • The Poly-61M has MIDI
  • The Poly-61 has 64 memories, instead of 32 on the Polysix
  • The Polysix has an analog effects board, whereas the Poly-61 has no effects

KORG POLY-61 HQ SOUND DEMO - vintage synthesizer 1983

Text from the video :
  • The Korg Poly-61 is a 6-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer. It was the successor of the classic Korg Polysix. It has 2 oscillators per voice and digital parameter access - like the Poly-800, which came later. The Poly-61 has DCO's and analog 12 dB/okt. filters for every voice (unlike the Poly-800, which has a single 24 dB filter for all voices). DCO 1 has PWM. There is only one ADSR envelope for VCF and VCA.

It also has CHORD MEMORY and an ARPGEGGIATOR - the same as featured on the Polysix.

The original Poly-61 came without MIDI. Later models had MIDI built in. Finally, the Poly-61M was released, which had MIDI as standard.

This video shows what a Poly-61 is capable of. I recorded the sounds without any additional effects or eq.

    ______________________________________

THE SOUND PROGRAMS IN THIS MOVIE:

Do you have a Poly-61 and want to play with the powerful sounds you are hearing here? You can get them for 11 Euros (through PayPal). I will send you the "ANALOGAUDIO1 PATCH BANK" (64 sounds) via email.
The bank contains lush analog pads, great retro sounds, fat basses, sequencer sounds (in one word: all you are hearing in this video and some more).

These sounds are mainly suited for electronica, techno pop, disco, dance, trance and classic electronic music (Jarre, Vangelis, etc..).

As an experienced synth player / programmer I programmed these special sounds carefully. These sounds are not available somewhere else.

ARP - 2600 - Demo

The ARP 2600 is one the most famous synths in the synth history. The main difference between this synth and its competitors was that it's semi-modular, so you have the benefits of a pre-patched synth and part of the freedom of a modular system.

ARP 2600 part1: Sound FX

ARP 2600 pt2 : classic Lead & Bass

Text from the video :
  • Recorded through Allen&Heath ZED R16's A/D converters with no EQ or processing.
I recently had recapped and modified my early 70's Tonus-logo ARP 2600 synthesizer. Everything works great now, plus my tech added extended FM and keyboard/LFO functions - even better than new! You can achieve these sounds using a stock 2600 as well, but mine has a few paths re-routed for convenience, also a rebuilt key-assembly, filter and PSU, an extra LFO etc.

Sound comparative : Moog Minimoog - Moog Prodigy

This video shows an interesting sound comparative between the Moog Minimoog and its little brother the Moog Prodigy. To my ears the Prodigy sounds brighter but the Minimoog has warmer sound. If you think that on the second hand market a Moog Prodigy costs 1/4 of the price of a Minimoog it's not a bad choice to buy a Prodigy and save the difference to buy other equipment ( please don't kill me for saying this )
