Sound Synthesis - Ensoniq ESQ-1

This video shows how easy is to program an Ensoniq ESQ-1 . This synthesizer only have one slider and two buttons to modify all the sound parameters. On the right side of the front panel there is the synth schema and every part of the synth has a button to access to his menu. The screen has ten buttons surrounding it to select all the parameters of that page, select one and changes the value with the slider ( or the up/down buttons). There are not hidden menus or double push buttons, all parameters are present in one screen. Maybe this procedure seems a bit complicated but it's just my explanation, believe me it's very easy ( I have one of this ) even despite this is a very complex synth ( 3osc, 3lfos, 4env ... )

Ensoniq ESQ-1 programming 1

Text from the video :
  • Reprogramming the 1st preset-piano on the Ensoniq ESQ-1 into something more appropriate. The ESQ-1 is certainly on of the easiest synths to program despite its' lack of dedicated knobs.

Pioneers - Curtis Roads

Vbs.tv interview with Curtis Roads, one of the pioneers in use granular synthesis in his musical compostions. This synthesis method is based on using small audio particles ( miliseconds) , called grains, to create new textures and sounds. Curtis is also well known for his books about granular synthesis and electronic music composition in general.

Motherboard - The granular synthesis of Curtis Roads

Text from the video :
  • There are two divergent streams in 20th century electronic music: The one most people are familiar with starts out with goofballs like Jean-Jacques Perrey and Vangelis noodling around on synthesizers and eventually devolves into Kaja Googoo. Curtis Roads is part of the other path, the one that follows insane geniuses like Stockhausen and Morton Subotnik and uses whatever-period-it-happens-to-be's state-of-the-art computer technology to produce compositions that completely defy conventional music logic and sometimes sound more like a freaked-out ATM than tunes you put on and listen to.

Sound Synthesis - Vintage Drum Machine

Today I've made this patch that emulates the sound of the first analog drum machines. The patch is made using a very limited number of modules ( 4 ) of my modular synthesizer and the MFOS 16 Step Analog sequencer. I've enjoyed a lot playing with this patch.

Modular Drum Machine - Synthesizers.com + Yusynth + MFOS

Text from the video :
  • This patch emulates the classical sound of the drum machines from the 60s-70s

The core of this patch is white noise generator , that is filtered using a multi mode filter.
The sequencer CV out is controlling the the 1/cvt input of the filter, so you can program on the sequencer different filter response for every step.

The filter has individual outs for filter types, here I'm using high-pass and band pass connected to a mixer and mixer out is conecto to VCA .

The VCA is controlled by one ADSR that is triggered by sequencer gate out.

Modules used in this patch :

    Yusynth Noise Generator
    Synthesizers.com State Variable Filter
    Synthesizers.com 4 Channel Mixer
    Synthesizers.com Envelope Generator
    Synthesizers.com Amplifier
    MFOS 16 Step Analog Sequencer

Sound Synthesis - Alesis Andromeda Atonal Synthesis

Alesis Andromeda Atonal Synthesis

Text from the video :
  • This instructional video explores atonal synthesis using the amazing Alesis Andromeda analogue synthesizer. We can investigate atonal applications for sound synthesis and with some background theory, understand how to create ambient pads and ringing atmospherics and similar sonic combinations. Analogue synthesis can create atonal and ringing timbres that can be played to bring about dissonance and clangourous combinations that can be used to create atonal musical sequences and special effects including background atmospherics and pads.

Alesis Andromeda Tonal Synthesis

Text from the video :
  • This instructional video explores tonal synthesis using the amazing Alesis Andromeda analogue synthesizer. We can investigate tonal applications for sound synthesis and with some background theory, understand how to create organ and similar keyboard timbres. Analogue synthesis can create choral and organ-type timbres that can be layered to bring about very rich and dynamic undulating sounds. These sounds can form the basis of very expressive regal compositions that can lend themselves to a wide variety of musical applications.

Sound Synthesis - Jean Michel Jarre Laser Harp sound

Cmatsuoka gives you tips to recreate the typical Laser Harp sound that can be heard on Jean Michel Jarre's album ,Rendez-Vous. The original one was created by Paul Wiffen on a Elka Synthex

Laser harp in the microkorg

Text from the video :
  • This is my first attempt at creating a program for the microkorg, so I picked up a sound that is easily recognizable. This is certainly not the best Synthex "laser harp" sound recreation around, but it should provide a good start for tweaks and improvements. The idea should work with any two-oscillator analog or analog-modeled synthesizer with oscillator sync, filtering and some kind of pitch envelope for the sync sweep. Actual values used in each parameter are shown in parentheses.

Sound Synthesis - Roland RS-09

One of the most imitated sounds of electronic music. The original one was made using an Eminet 310 organ. On this video AnalogAudio1 shows that you can get similar sounds using another string synthesizer.

ROLAND RS-09 - OXYGENE / JARRE sound with RS-09 + SMALL STONE

Text from the video :
  • If you want the OXYGENE / JARRE sound - and an Eminent 310 organ is to heavy, to big, to expensive for you - a Roland RS-09 "Organ / Strings" for example, can deliver a similar sound. Of course the sound is not 100% authentic like played with an Eminent, but it is a quite good compromise. On this video you hear a Roland RS-09, a Roland DEP-5 for delay and an Electro-Harmonix Small Stone Pedal.

Sound Synthesis - Vangelis sound

This video explain how to obtain the typical Vangelis sound from Blade Runner. Vangelis used Yamaha CS-80 on this soundtrack, here meastempo uses Yamaha CS70M but I think that you can get similar results with other synths. Experiment and have fun!!!

That Vangelis bladerunner sound...

Text from the video :
  • With a Yamaha CS70M (not the Yamaha CS80, but almost there). It can sound even closer with some more tweaks. Playing sampled string-loops (on the Roland MV-8800) from original soundtrack with my other hand.

Modular Madness - Mondo Modular 6

Mondo Modular Episode 6

Text from the video :
  • A whole new set-up for the equipment and some esoteric additions to the line-up make for an episode in which audio aesthetics take a backseat to the simple reality of making sure everything is just plugged-in and working.

So this one is not as musically pleasing as some other episodes, but I hope you still find it interesting viewing nonetheless.

Even more equipment has arrived since this was recorded (gasp!) so the next installment should really be something...!

Thanks as always for your patience and interest!

    Scooter McCrae

P.S. I have tried posting replies to those nice enough to leave comments whenever I can, but more often than not they just don't register on the site so I've given up trying for now. My apologies as I'm not ignoring anybody or what they have to say.

Modular Madness - Mondo Modular 5

Mondo Modular Episode 5

Text from the video :
  • Back-in-action after a short hiatus (note new studio set-up -- but more about that in an upcoming video), I'm finally making good on some of that Herb Deutsch footage I promised a few episodes back. I figured there was no better time to do this than around the time of what would have been Bob Moog's 74th birthday (May 23rd).

I'll post a couple of fun stories from Gershon Kingsley next time and then return to the familiar format (ie: my dorking around with my various knobs and patch cables).

Special thanks to the Grammy folks who recently gave some money to the Moog Foundation to try and get the various papers and prototypes in Bob's old work shed in some kind of order and will hopefully see to the future preservation of.

Mondo Modular Episode 4

Text from the video :
  • What kind of modular madman makes use of not one, but TWO Sample & Hold modules at the same time?!? Prepare to have your ears seared right off by the twinkly-dinkly beauty of randomly generated tones and whatnot.

This episode has a very special guest whom I hope will be making many more appearances as these audio experiments continue (and I hope you find her as adorable as I do).

Thanks as always to the faithful, patient and downright curious who choose to give these videos a perusal.
